About Us

Delta Education Vineyard offers a unique hands-on learning experience where students have an active role in managing a vineyard. Students helped build the vineyard from the ground up—from research to design to planting the seeds.
The curriculum includes agricultural production, business management, financial planning, marketing and communication, business negotiations, and risk management. The vineyard is also home to a weather station so students can monitor the conditions of the atmosphere and soil and tend to the vineyard accordingly. While students frequently get the opportunity to work outside the classroom, they also benefit from the guest lecturer program where local industry leaders speak to classes about careers in crop science, soil science, scouting, vineyard management, and winemaking.
Work first began on the vineyard in 2014 and it was officially established in 2017. The Delta Education Vineyard is financed by donations and grant funds. It is organized and managed by a non-profit organization of the same name.
Together, DHS students, CMS students, Ag teachers, and community volunteers maintain the vineyard. At harvest, the Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc grapes are purchased, vinified, and sold as wine by the Old Sugar Mill—over nine tons of grapes in 2020. Students help organize and implement this process, allowing them to observe a business plan from start to finish. The Delta Education Vineyard plans to eventually become self-sufficient from the proceeds it generates.
